On February 13th, the USPTO published final rules of practice implementing the first-inventor-to-file provision of the America Invents Act (AIA). This will become effective on March 16, 2013. The provision is one of the hallmarks of the AIA and is a major step towards harmonization of the U.S. patent system with those of the United States’ major trading partners. This allows greater consistency in the prosecution and enforcement of U.S. patents.
On January 1st 2013, the USPTO launched the Cooperative Patent Classification system. This common classification system will enhance the examination capabilities of both the USPTO and the European Patent Office.
